Advisory — University of Lethbridge officially reopening Community Sports Stadium turf for community use

Thursday, August 25, 2022

The University of Lethbridge recently completed a $911,000 renovation of the Community Sports Stadium by replacing the 12-year-old turf with new FieldTurf. The new surface enhances the playability of the stadium, bringing it in line with Canadian Football League and National Football League stadiums across North America.

WHAT: Official reopening and Indigenous blessing of Community Sports Stadium with City of Lethbridge and community partners, culminating with ceremonial kicks from all representatives

WHEN: Friday, August 26, 2022, at 11 a.m.

WHERE: University Community Sports Stadium, North 20-yard-line

WHO: ULethbridge representatives including President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mike Mahon, City of Lethbridge Mayor Blaine Hyggen, community sport representatives and Elder Francis First Charger

The vision of the University Community Sports Stadium was to create a first-rate facility for Pronghorn Athletics that would also welcome minor sport from throughout the region. In the past 12 years, the stadium has been just that, serving as a hub of activity for southern Alberta sport, hosting everything from track and field to soccer, rugby and football. Schools and community organizations alike have utilized the stadium, hosting athletes and their families from all ages — becoming a centre for the celebration of sport and the coming together of community.

The new FieldTurf surface has three times the infill per square foot of the previous product, producing a field that plays and feels like real grass. With the same product as six CFL, six NFL and approximately 35 other Canadian university fields, the redeveloped Community Sports Stadium will enhance the playability and safety of the surface for all users.
