Wednesday, January 31, 2024

The University of Lethbridge celebrates Black History Month under the theme Black Joy: The Telling of Our Stories.

Black History Month is a celebration of the achievements and contributions of not only Black Canadians but also persons of Black, Caribbean or African Heritage. Every February, we recognize the contributions of Black people and Black communities, highlighting their significant and ongoing role in shaping Canada’s identity.

Black History Month celebrates the resiliency, flourishing, and determination to work towards a more equitable, inclusive and diverse country.

WHAT: Black History Month kickoff event

WHEN: Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024, 9 a.m.

WHERE: Science Commons Atrium

Join the ULethbridge community in celebrating the launch of Black History Month. This event will feature a cultural performance from the ULethbridge Black Students' Association and a presentation from Faculty of Fine Arts alumnus Stephen Onyango, a cinematographer & creative director. The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion team will also provide updates on current and upcoming projects.

About Stephen Onyango

Stephen Onyango (BFA ’13) is a cinematographer and creative director of Legend Productions in southern Alberta. He holds a journalism degree from his home country of Kenya and a Bachelor of Fine Arts New Media from ULethbridge. Stephen has a deep passion for storytelling and performance, which has always been part of his journey from high school to the present day. In 2017, he noticed that social media was growing, but something was missing. Legend Productions has been focused on disrupting the landscape and shifting the approach by pumping emotions and storytelling online. In 2023, Stephen embarked on another journey and launched Legend Art Gallery — a place where international art dances off the walls, inviting one on a journey beyond the ordinary.
