Advisory — Faculty of Education hosting 16 school divisions for PS III Large-Group Seminar and Symposium

More than 150 Faculty of Education students at the University of Lethbridge are gearing up to get their networking on Friday, December 9, as they prepare to graduate and enter their exciting careers as teachers. The PS III Large-Group Seminar and Symposium is the last big event for PS III (Professional Semester III, the final 12-week practicum) students, and representatives from 16 Alberta school divisions will be on campus to speak with students and see the results of their professional inquiry projects.

Where: Faculty of Education Curriculum Lab (LINC L1170 – one floor up from main library entrance)

When: Friday, December 9, 2022, from 8:45 – 11:50 a.m. 

Media Availability: 9:45 a.m. Sharon Pelech (Interim Assistant Dean of Field Experiences, Faculty of Education), Mark Swanson (Coordinator of Professional Development, Alberta Teachers’ Association) and ULethbridge PS III student teachers will be available.

School Division Walkabout 

Representatives from 16 Alberta school divisions will have booths set up to talk to students about specific job openings and division priorities. Some divisions will interview for openings and even hire students on the spot at the event. 

Welcome to the Profession: Information from the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) 

Presenter Mark Swanson, Professional Development Coordinator for the ATA, will chat with students to ensure their entry into the teaching profession is successful, with information on certification and supports available through the ATA.

How to get hired: Administrators’ Panel 

School administrators will talk to students about hiring practices and answer any questions they might have about the process of getting into the field. The panel includes: Russ Sommerfeldt (Principal, Magrath High School – Westwind School Division), Morgan Day (Vice-Principal, Winston Churchill Highschool – Lethbridge School Division) and Alastair Wilson (recently retired principal, Calgary Board of Education). 

Professional Inquiry Project (PIP) Symposium 

A Professional Inquiry Project (PIP) must be completed by each pre-service teacher during PS III. 18 students are set to present their PIPs to colleagues and faculty from 1:00-3:00 p.m. in the Curriculum Lab, with a panel to choose a recipient for the Wigham Family PIP Award.
