Ashley Patzer powered the women's rugby team to a pair of convincing victories, while Matt Medoruma led the men's soccer squad to its first victory of the season. For that, the pair has been recognized as Pronghorn Athletes of the Week.
Female Athlete of the Week
Ashley Patzer – Women's Rugby
Lethbridge Pronghorns captain Ashley Patzer led her to team to two consecutive road victories this past weekend on the west coast, defeating the Victoria Vikes and UBC Thunderbirds. The Horns moved to 3-0 on the season and have outscored their opponents by an astonishing 195-0 cumulative margin.
Patzer orchestrated the Horns' first four tries against Victoria before being subbed out in the 79-0 win over the Vikes. In Sunday's 50-0 thrashing of the Thunderbirds, Patzer, a member of the senior women's national team, scored two tries and kicked five converts to lead the Horns with 20 points.
Patzer was also named the Canada West female athlete of the week.
Male Athlete of the Week
Matt Medoruma – Men's Soccer
Matt Medoruma played the hero on Sunday, scoring the winning goal as the Horns men's soccer team secured a 3-2 victory over the visiting Calgary Dinos. It was the club's first Canada West victory of the season.
After taking last season away from soccer, Medoruma returned to the Horns this season and has stepped back into the lineup as a key contributor. Medoruma has played in all eight games thus far, recording eight shots and one goal, and he has been a constant offensive presence from the midfield position.
