ART NOW - Graeme Patterson Speaks February 13th, 2015 at Noon in the Recital Hall

This latest body of work by Graeme Patterson tells a nostalgic story of two characters who embark on a series of bittersweet adventures.  From childhood to adulthood, stages of life are conveyed in idiosyncratic animated videos that accompany large sculptures containing highly detailed miniature worlds.  Each of the sculptures reflects on a stage of life.  Though Patterson focuses on male friendships, viewers can relate to the subtleties and complexities inherent in all close relationships.

ART NOW - Antonia Hirsch Speaks February 9th, 2015 at Noon in the Recital Hall

Antonia Hirsch's practice testifies to a long-standing engagement with the quantitative, spatial and syntactic systems that structure an understanding of our universe.  The opposite of chaos, cosmos can be defined as a complex and organized system: the ordered universe.  Hirsch's work often relates these ordering structures to embodied and visual experience, considering how the ideological nature of these representational systems expresses itself through particular forms of abstraction.

ART NOW - Chih-Chien Wang Speaks Jan 28th, 2015 at Noon in the Recital Hall

Artist’s Statement

“My work takes one’s everyday experience as the subject and transforms it into simple forms to evoke personal responses while maintaining uncertainty and distanced readings to the subject. The juxtaposition of simple elements creates dialogues within and potentially generates personal attachment and implication. It is through the collection and the re-enactment of materials, spaces, observations and meanings that the complexity of one’s perception toward everyday life would be reminded and recognized.“

ART NOW - David Miller Speaks Jan 19th, 2015 at Noon in the Recital Hall

David Miller is the 2014 winner of the Duke and Duchess of York Prize in Photography.

“In an era of fleeting snapshots that appear and disappear in cyberspace, his works are testament to the power of photographs as objects – time bound memorials of elusive subjects. Miller’s practice is a persistent enquiry into the nature and act of photography itself.” http://canadacouncil.ca/council/artists/d/david-miller-duke-duchessofyork
