A key role in supporting the continued growth and success of the University of Lethbridge will soon be available as the search for the next ULethbridge chancellor is underway.
Chancellor Terry Whitehead’s (BA ’94) four-year term as the institution’s 15th chancellor is coming to a close on Mar. 15, 2027, marking an era of significant innovation and achievement for the University.
“Working and collaborating with our Senate to advocate for our university has been extremely rewarding,” says Whitehead. “The Senate is fully engaged and passionate about advancing the extraordinary research, teaching, campus activities, campaigns and events that happen on campus. The Senate's enthusiasm is infectious and a joy to behold. This diverse group has been wonderful to work with and an honour to lead.”
A public search now commences for Whitehead’s successor as the University seeks a visible, collaborative individual who is deeply committed to the institution, its students and community. The 16th chancellor will be joining ULethbridge as it celebrates its 60th anniversary.
“Thank you to Chancellor Whitehead for the enthusiasm he brought to this important role the last four years,” says ULethbridge President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Digvir Jayas. “As an engaged and philanthropic alumnus, Terry had always been connected to our university in multiple ways, and throughout his term as chancellor he championed some really innovative programs centred around the student experience and specifically food security initiatives.”
A volunteer position, the chancellor’s role is integral to ULethbridge and its mission as the chancellor represents the public interest in the University. As Chair of the University Senate, the chancellor is an ex officio member of the Board of Governors and serves as a key ambassador for the University locally, provincially and beyond. In addition, the chancellor presides over all degree-confirming ceremonies and confers all degrees, as well as represents the University at ceremonial occasions.
“The top of my experience was personally greeting each graduate at their convocation ceremony,” says Dr. Janice Varzari (BN ’90, MEd ’02, LLD ’21), Chancellor Emerita (2015-2019). “I was privileged to confer honorary degrees and to celebrate our students at athletic events, fine arts events and academic celebrations. I appreciated every single opportunity to meet students, faculty, staff and community members.”
The public search and nomination process for the next chancellor is now open. Nominees for chancellor must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents, possess a strong interest in university-community affairs and education, and have adequate time to apply to the considerable duties involved. This is a volunteer position with no remuneration.
Official nomination forms, requiring the names and addresses of three nominators, the signed consent of the nominee and any supporting documentation, will be received in the Senate Office until Nov. 12, 2026. The successful candidate will take office March 16, 2027.
