In this lecture visual artist Jennifer Wanner will discuss her exhibition Second Nature that is currently on view at both the Helen Christou Gallery and the Project Channel satellite space. Wanner’s art practice examines botanical art and nature cinema in a world dominated by “second nature” – a virtual simulation of pristine “first nature” wrought by the revolution in information, biotechnologies, and consumer culture.

In early 2016, Musagetes, an international arts foundation, launched two inter-related programs: (1) the ArtsEverywhere online platform (ArtsEverywhere.ca) and (2) a rhizomatically expanding series of Trans-national Projects in São Paulo, New York, Dakar, and elsewhere. Both of these programs, in addition to Musagetes’ long-term city programs, are based on a belief that many of the most powerful disruptions to our society’s flawed systems and institutions come from positions of struggle—from those on the front lines and those in solidarity with them.

It is “our continuous exposure to foods throughout our lifetime that renders diet the most important environmental factor challenging our biological system” (Mutch, et al, 2005). One of the most “challenged biological system” has been our brains, having to adapt to our technologically driven reality at a frenetic pace, including the drastic changes to our food system. This presentation will discuss the role of the changing diet in modern society on our mental health and child neurocognitive development.
