ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN NOW - Shawn Van Sluys Speaks March 6th, 2017 at 6pm in L1060

In early 2016, Musagetes, an international arts foundation, launched two inter-related programs: (1) the ArtsEverywhere online platform (ArtsEverywhere.ca) and (2) a rhizomatically expanding series of Trans-national Projects in São Paulo, New York, Dakar, and elsewhere. Both of these programs, in addition to Musagetes’ long-term city programs, are based on a belief that many of the most powerful disruptions to our society’s flawed systems and institutions come from positions of struggle—from those on the front lines and those in solidarity with them.

This year Musagetes celebrates the 10th anniversary of the launch of its Manifesto. Beginning with the principles set out there, the organization and its partners have been on a journey, putting emergence and co-creation at the heart of its processes and protocols. Learning from its city-based experiments has, in turn, enabled Musagetes to elaborate on and augment these early principles.

This talk by Shawn Van Sluys, Musagetes’ Executive Director, will trace the 10-year design and development of Musagetes’s methodology. This will not be a typical architecture and design talk, but will focus on Musagetes’ recent design- and urbanism-related projects and inquiries: Queer City (São Paulo), the Arbert Santana Ballroom Freedom & Free School (New York), and their relation to the ArtsEverywhere online platform. The talk will consist of a 20-minute summary of Musagetes’ development and methodology, a 10-minute overview of ArtsEverywhere, a 20-minute introduction to Queer City and the Ballroom Freedom School, a 30-minute film about queer performativity in São Paulo, and conclude with Q&A.
