Spear Chief-Morris earns double award

University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's basketball player Julian Spear Chief-Morris has been named Subway Pronghorn Athlete of the Week and Canada West Male Athlete of the Week following his performance this past weekend.

In the second to last weekend of his final conference season, the fifth-year swingman combined for 53 points and 19 rebounds to lead the 'Horns to a weekend sweep of the Regina Cougars to keep the 'Horns' post-season dreams alive.

To cap off a career high 28 points Friday night, Spear Chief-Morris tipped in his own miss with two-tenths of a second remaining in overtime to give the 'Horns a 93-91 victory over the Cougars. He also chipped in with eight rebounds on the night.

Saturday night, Spear Chief-Morris authored an encore performance with a 25-point effort to lead all scorers in the 'Horns' 103-88 win. He added 11 rebounds to complete a double-double.

With two games remaining in the conference schedule, Spear Chief-Morris sits second on the 'Horns in scoring average at 14.7 points per game.

On the women's side, Shauntelle Parsons of the women's hockey team picked up the Horns Athlete of the Week honour.

Making consecutive starts in net for the first time this season, Parsons stopped 58 of the 63 shots she faced, backstopping the 'Horns to a weekend split with the Saskatchewan Huskies to conclude the 2012-13 Canada West season.

In the 'Horns' 4-3 shootout victory Friday night, Parsons stopped 27 shots and stopped all three Huskies in the shootout to earn her first win of the season, 4-3. In the season finale, Parsons turned aside 31 shots in the 'Horns' 3-0 loss. The Huskies sealed the 'Horns fate with an empty net goal with seven seconds remaining.
