Tous les matins du monde (All the Mornings of the World) (France, Alain Corneau, 1991). The once-celebrated viola de gamba player Sainte-Colombe has retreated after the death of his wife. His daughters are his only pupils, but a young virtuoso appears requesting lessons. Between the master’s shack and the court of Louis XIV, the young musician refines his technique, while neglecting his soul. (In French with English subtitles)

Modern Languages & Linguistics Film Series: Film 1: Tango

Tango (Spain & Argentina, Carlos Saura, 1998). After his wife leaves him, middle-aged theatre director Mario Suárez throws himself into making a film about tango. Gradually life and dance become blurred by his emotional entanglement with one of the dancers, and by his political criticism of Argentina’s regime. (In Spanish with English subtitles)
