Art NOW talk featuring Rachael Chaisson
Noon | Oct. 5
University Recital Hall
Free, all are welcome to attend
The talk is on Water Ways and other dream scapes.
Rachael Chaisson is a multidisciplinary artist working with intersections between sound, movement and storytelling through objects. She creates immersive experiences with kinetic elements, interactive objects, electronics, and field recordings. Her work reimagines personal and collective histories attached to objects, landscapes, and memory, encouraging viewers to find reflection and take time. Recurring themes within her work are site specific daydreams, microcosms and macrocosms, and the murky waters of human relationships.
From Lyalta, Alberta, and currently residing in Lethbridge, she holds a BFA (2012) from the former Alberta College of Art + Design. She has shown in Calgary, AB, and participated in residencies at the Banff Centre, Island Mountain Arts, and the Canadian Wilderness Artist Residency on the Yukon River. She has a complicated tapestry of work lives that have influenced her greatly, from gallery preparator, fabricator, parks & heritage worker, and landscape custodian of cemeteries and sacred sites.
The artist would like to thank and draw attention to the following conservation organizations working to protect the wildlife and ecosystems interacted with in this project: Grassland Restoration Forum, Kainai Ecosystem Protection Association/Naapi's Garden, Alberta Conservation Association, The Oldman & Milk River Watershed Councils, Miistakis Institute, Ducks Unlimited, Cows & Fish, and the Whitebark Pine Ecosystem Foundation, all of which she learned from by attending conferences and events. Thank you especially to Jane Lancaster (GRF) and Julie Landry-DeBoer (ACA) for the connections and opportunities to go on field trips. Donations to, membership, or participation in their public events helps keep these organizations afloat.
