Artist Statement
River’s Invocations is a series of six paintings that honor River as a sentient, sovereign being—alive with memory, voice, and story. This collection emerges from my work as an artist and creation-centred researcher, approaching River not as subject but as co-creator, whose wisdom shapes the very process of making.

The paintings are visual invocations, gestures of reverence and reciprocal witnessing. They are grounded in the belief that River holds memory—of migrations, ceremonies, kin, floods, losses, and returns. From this place of relation, my inquiry asks: What does it mean to live ethically with water? To be moved by River—emotionally, physically, spiritually, methodologically?

Through color, movement, and form, each painting traces murmurations of spirit and cosmological threads of bloodlines flowing through water, land, and sky. Together, the works affirm River as both living being and living pedagogy. River’s Invocations calls attention to the sacredness of rivers—their rights, their memory, and their voice—inviting us to listen deeply, respond with reverence, and remember our place within the flow of relation.

Darlene St. Georges is Associate Professor of Art Education at the University of Lethbridge. Her creation-centred research practice weaves painting, poetics, narrative, and pedagogy to explore elemental beings as co-creators. Recent work, including River’s Invocations, engages water, sky, land, and cosmos as sentient pedagogies—living literacies that illuminate kinship, memory, and relational ethics.
