Architecture & Design NOW series presents Ian MacLachlan
International Style Skyscrapers of Montreal, 1960-1970
6 pm | January 23, 2023
Room L1060, LINC Building
Free admission, everyone welcome

In the 5th lecture of his skyscraper series, Ian MacLachlan focuses on Montreal and the 1960s when the International Style transformed the city’s commercial core. But that was not all, the Quiet Revolution, Separatism, the Metro, Expo, Centennial year, and Trudeaumania made Montreal an exciting place just as it was surrendering commercial primacy to its archrival on Lake Ontario. This lecture focuses on six International Style structures: Edifice Jean Lesage, Tour CIBC, Place Ville Marie, Tour Telus, Tour de la Bourse, and Westmount Square.

Ian MacLachlan is Professor Emeritus of Geography at the University of Lethbridge. His academic career included appointments in Sapporo; Mexico City; Edinburgh; and Perth, Western Australia. Ian now divides his time between Alberta and China where he is a Professor at Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School, School of Urban Planning and Design. With research that spans regional development, urban planning, and architectural history, he has published in a range of geography, planning and urban history journals.  As a destination speaker for Viking Ocean, he applies a geographic lens to the fascinating regional features at ports of call from the North Sea to the Med, across the Atlantic, and on to Panama. In recent years, he has been developing a lecture series on skyscrapers in America, where they first developed, in their unique Canadian incarnation, and now in Asia which has come to dominate the world’s mega tall structures.
