The recital program begins with a stunning Sonata by American composer Daniel Dorff. The Sonata takes the listener on a journey through three lakes that hold special memories for the composer. This will be followed by the short and mischievous Danse de la Chévre by Swiss Composer Arthur Honegger. The program will end with the popular Sonata for flute and piano by Russian composer Otar Taktakishvili. The Sonata is in three movements and showcases folk material.

To keep our audiences safe, and in accordance with uLethbridge COVID-19 protocols and as part of the province's Restriction Exemption Program, starting September 20, 2021, audience members 12 years and older attending an event in any venue at the uLethbridge Centre for the Arts will be required to either show proof they have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or proof that they have tested negative for COVID-19 within 72 hours prior to attending the event. Event attendees will be asked to show this proof prior to entering any venue. Attendees who cannot provide this attestation will be refused entry. Sarah MacDonald, flute
Canadian flutist Sarah (Gieck) MacDonald was born and raised in Calgary, where she continues to reside. She holds a BMus in performance from the University of Calgary, MMus from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England and an Artist Diploma Degree from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. She has studied with many of the world’s most sought after teachers including Lorna McGhee, William Bennett, Peter Lloyd and Dr. Bradley Garner.

As a soloist and chamber musician, Sarah enjoys performing across Alberta, especially when she can bring music to small towns and rural communities. She has played with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra since fall of 2009 as a regular guest musician. She has considerable experience in all positions including the piccolo chair and has played as a full-time orchestra member for several seasons as acting assistant principal flute.

Sarah has over 20 years of experience teaching flute. She joined the University of Lethbridge music sessional faculty in 2008 where she continues to teach. She has a deep love for teaching the flute, and enjoys working with students of all abilities and thrives on learning to teach alongside her students as they work together.

Cheryl Emery Karapita, piano

Canadian Pianist Cheryl Emery-Karapita is based in Lethbridge and specializes in the field of song in recital with Canada’s emerging vocal talent. After completing an M.Mus in Vocal Operatic Coaching at McGill with Michael McMahon, Cheryl moved to Europe to pursue a Post-Graduate degree in Concert Accompanying with Julius Drake at the Kunst Universität in Graz, Austria. In addition to studies in Graz, Cheryl spent two summers in Baden bei Wien working with Helmut Deutsch, Roger Vignoles, Rudolph Jansen and Wolfram Rieger at the Franz Schubert-Institut.

Current projects include co-founding the piano ensemble FOURtitude, recitals, recordings, playing with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and Luminous Voices, commissioning new works in addition to teaching piano and vocal students at the University of Lethbridge and Casa Art Centre in Lethbridge.
