This program reflects on the connections we make through interactions. Paracusia explores our own psyche as the narrator (or saxophonist) explores their relationship to themselves and their perceived realities (both real and imagined). The textures and overlapping sounds combined with the virtuosity and techniques of the saxophone would not be possible without the unique connection and friendship forged between Marcos Balter and Ryan Muncy to create the piece Cardinal. Finally, Imprints in Time explores the energy our personal histories create, akin to how objects can bend space and time.

PROGRAM

To keep our audiences safe, and in accordance with uLethbridge COVID-19 protocols and as part of the province's Restriction Exemption Program, starting September 20, 2021, audience members 12 years and older attending an event in any venue at the uLethbridge Centre for the Arts will be required to either show proof they have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or proof that they have tested negative for COVID-19 within 72 hours prior to attending the event. Event attendees will be asked to show this proof prior to entering any venue. Attendees who cannot provide this attestation will be refused entry. Masks are mandatory on campus and for the full duration of the recital. We appreciate our audience's understanding and support!

Biography
Canadian saxophonist Dr. Justin Massey is an interpreter of contemporary music based in Toronto, Ontario. With an obsession of creating new sonorities and textures through the saxophone, Justin searches for obscure and unexplored sounds offered by the instrument and its unparalleled potential to create visceral and emotional music. Justin presents music of his generation in all of his performances by commissioning new repertoire and collaborating closely with composers in search of these new sounds, often through electronic manipulation of the saxophone. Recently, Justin has commissioned and premiered new works for saxophone and live electronics by Carolyn Borcherding, Camila Agosto, Brian Lee Topp, Jacob Sachs-Mishalanie, and Jason Charney. He is currently working in collaboration with Camila Agosto to create and perform the five movement Paracusia series for saxophone and live electronics.
