Music at Noon presents Deanna Oye, piano
Poetry in Harmony: Franz Liszt's Sonic and Spiritual Journeys
12:15 pm | March 7, 2023
University Recital Hall
Free admission, everyone welcome!
Franz Liszt was venerated by his contemporaries as a virtuoso pianist of incomparable stardom, a master with an immense technical prowess and a compositional skill to match. At the height of his career, he began to explore a more introspective side in his compositions, contemplating literary and religious influences, and pushing the boundaries of expected harmonic trajectory. This program explores this crossroad through two major works from his famous Années de pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage) and three miniatures that beautifully illustrate Liszt's sensitivity to harmony, thematic transformation, luxurious warmth, and romantic yearning.
Pianist Deanna Oye is Associate Professor in the Department of Music where she teaches Studio Piano and directs the U of L Collaborative Ensemble, and also teaches with the U of L Conservatory of Music. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the Eastman School of Music where she studied with Dr. Jean Barr, and has given solo and collaborative performances throughout Canada, the U.S., Scotland, Germany, and Japan, with broadcasts on CBC Radio Two and National Public Radio in the USA. Deanna is active as an adjudicator, master class clinician and is frequently invited to give career talks to aspiring musicians. She is also passionate about helping her students make connections between music and their other passions and mentoring them to find their own unique niche in the music world.
