What is the role of contemporary art publishing in 2020, a year when two global events—the coronavirus pandemic and the uprising against anti-Black police brutality—converged powerfully in the public sphere? This talk will explore some of the possibilities for art writing and publishing in this context, as artists and audiences demand that galleries, museums, and art institutions rethink their mandates and structures.

Jayne Wilkinson is Editor-in-Chief at Canadian Art and is also a writer and independent curator. Her interdisciplinary research practice examines surveillance cultures, environmental politics, security and representation with a focus on contemporary art and photo-based practices. Prior to joining Canadian Art, she held positions at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Emily Carr University of Art + Design, Prefix ICA, Prefix Photo and the Blackwood Gallery (University of Toronto Mississauga). She holds a BA in Art History and Studio Art from the University of Guelph and an MA in Art History and Critical Theory from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver.

We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts. Nous remercions le Conseil des arts du Canada de son soutien.
