Crystallomancy: Escapism and the Search for Meaning Through Screens

In this lecture, Gabriel Esteban Molina will be exploring his practice and its inspiration, and the union of the subjects that inspire him with the formal and conceptual elements of his work photographing and recording screens. Gabriel will be walking through, mostly conversationally, the paths and choices that have informed his work since its inception up to and including the work at the SAAG.

Gabriel Esteban Molina is a multidisciplinary visual artist of Chilean descent based in amiskwaciy-wâskahikan (Edmonton, Alberta). After graduating from the University of Alberta in 2013 with a BFA in Fine Arts, he completed his MA: Fine Art (merit) at the Chelsea College of Arts in London, United Kingdom in 2015. Gabriel has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada, United Kingdom, Italy, and Iceland. He completed the inaugural Emerging Artist residency at The Banff Centre for the Arts in 2018 and the ArtsIceland Residency in 2019 with an exhibition at The Outvert Space. In 2020 Gabriel collaborated with Kyle Terrence’s project and Aaron Brown, in ‘Berta Boys, a surreal film exploring petro masculinity in Alberta, which premiered at Latitude 53 and was shown at the Edmonton International Film Festival in 2020. Since 2020 his work has been featured online via artfromhere.ca by Latitude 53, Dyscorpia 2.1, as well as on Yamamoto Keiko Rochaix and will be exhibiting at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery in 2021, and at Latitude 53 in 2022.
