About the artist

RL Martens is a Philadelphia/Lenapehoking based artist. Their work explores the politics of soil health, agricultural strategies, and the social histories tied to land and resource extraction that are archived in ground. His place-based practice often begins with the speculative question “what if the soil could speak?” and includes walking, listening, making, conversation, and archival research. Martens holds a master's degree in critical geography and has exhibited work at the Washington Project for the Arts, the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington, the New York State Museum, been invited to speak at the University of Warwick and Duke University, and published in Undercurrents, Room One Thousand, and Edge Effects journals, among others.
