Art NOW featuring Kegan McFadden
Curating Ghosts
February 25 | Noon | Zoom webinar
Free admission, everyone welcome
Reflecting on current and upcoming curatorial projects, Kegan will discuss three differing examples of working with the material from artists who have died: Kelly Mark (1967–2025); Judy Cranmer (1935-2009), and Jean Pierre LeMaître (1964-2006). From conceptual installation art to craft to poetry, the curatorial work associated in amplifying these artists' distinct voices takes a new kind of care and consideration. In Curating Ghosts Kegan will offer a brief overview of each of the above mentioned projects, with an annotated discussion of how his curatorial approach shifts from one project to the next.
About the speaker
Writer, curator, and artist, Kegan McFadden’s research considers under-represented art histories with a focus on the recent past and the power of the anecdote as a way of undermining hegemonies. Primarily an essayist, McFadden has published throughout Canada’s artist-run network, as well as with the magazines Border Crossings, Canadian Art, C-Magazine, Galleries West, fuse, Visual Arts News among other journals for nearly twenty years. While his writing has been translated into French, Japanese, Inuktitut, and Spanish, Kegan’s curatorial projects have been exhibited across Canada and internationally since 2005. He was appointed executive director of the community-driven non-profit, Victoria Arts Council, in 2018 where he has actively contributed curatorial and editorial projects that have reshaped the cultural landscape of the city.
