About the artist
April Matisz is a contemporary artist based in Lethbridge, Alberta. Her practice is varied, using paints, drawing materials, collage and clay to explore a multitude of ideas. Matisz fuses the arts and sciences within her work, exploring disciplines such as ecology and philosophy to question why we think and behave as we do. Alongside these investigations, she considers personal and cultural experiences of motherhood.
Through a process-based practice, Matisz engages materials as active collaborators. Her work unfolds into colourful forms, intricate mark-making, and curious installations that consider human relationships and lived experience in the contemporary condition.
Matisz is the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including the Mackenzie Award in Painting from Emily Carr and two Alberta Foundation for the Arts grants. Her work has been exhibited in Alberta and Puerto Rico and is held in public and private collections, including the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
