Architecture & Design NOW series featuring Perry Stein (BA '09)
The Anti-colonial Planner and Ethical Space
September 22 | 6 PM | Room L1060
Fee admission, everyone welcome
There are many professions actively engaged in the planning, building and managing of urban spaces. Among these professions, Planners in particular have taken up the call to understand their role in perpetuating the harms of colonization, and to consider their role in reconciliation. This presentation explores what it means to be an anti-colonial Planner and to build a practice of ethical space.
Perry Stein, MA, RPP, MCIP, is a Registered Professional Planner, alumnus of Simon Fraser University (MA, Latin American Studies, '11) and the University of Lethbridge (BA, Urban and Regional Studies, '09), where he is also a member of the Alumni Honour Society. Perry has worked at the intersection of municipal planning and reconciliation for more than 15 years. He has been honoured with a Blackfoot name, Miistaksi'piitaa (Mountain Eagle), and his collaborative work has been widely recognized, including by the Government of Alberta, the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation, the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Commonwealth Association of Planners. Mr. Stein is an active 'pracademic' and regularly contributes to the advancement of his profession through publications and presentations including on topics related to reconciliation and land use planning, heritage management, public realm design and work-integrated learning. He is a Research Affiliate at the Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy at ULethbridge and a member of the Health Citizenship Research Cluster at University College London. Recently, Perry was also a contributing author to UN-Habitat's International Charter for Participatory Democracy presented at the World Urban Forum in Cairo in 2024.
