Coming Out in the Workplace

Loud and Proud at ULethbridge

Coming out in the workplace can be a daunting undertaking. Coming out is never a one-time affair, but rather an ongoing series of negotiations that 2SLGBTQ+ folks undertake on a regular basis. Coming out in the workplace can be especially overwhelming, with the many considerations and concerns that go with it. We are working to make ULethbridge a welcoming and affirming destination for 2SLGBTQ+ students, scholars, and professionals to find belonging and connection.

We have compiled a database of resources to help support 2SLGBTQ+ employees to navigate coming out on campus, finding the supports they need, and finding community at ULethbridge. This database includes a checklist to help guide you through the process of coming out and being out in the workplace, starting with reviewing policies and human rights legislation, to how to talk to managers and coworkers.

There are also helpful guides and resources to support 2SLGBTQ+ folks in with a variety of topics, from changing your name, to finding affirming healthcare providers, legal supports, and more. There are step-by-step instructions on how to update your legal name in employee records, as well as how to include a chosen, non-legal name into you records that will replace your legal name in the majority of institutional systems, should you not wish to be addressed by your legal name.

There are also many resources for allies and co-conspirators to support a welcoming and inclusive campus. These resources span from hiring guides and employment best practices to archives, 2SLGBTQ+ curriculum guides, and much more.
