Switching out

The technology that powers the switching systems in the elevators that serve
University Hall will take a big leap forward beginning in late March.

1960s vintage switches and that controls elevator movements from floor to floor will be replaced with electronic circuit boards, among other upgrades. In this photo, Rick Peter, Manager, Operation and Controls, looks over a large panel of switches which will soon be replaced with a circuit board the size of a small toaster oven.

The interiors of all the elevators will also receive a major makeover, with new interior panels, lighting and floor selector buttons. What this means, though, is that for at least 10 weeks per elevator, people used to being gently lifted to their floor will have to take the stairs or use an alternate elevator. Every effort will be made to minimize disruption, and this advance notice is part of that process.

The elevators will be shut down in sequence, as outlined below.

Signs will be posted inside and outside the affected elevator areas to inform people of the planned shutdown dates.

The schedule for the elevators to be out of service is as follows:

- B Block elevator: March 22 – June 4, 2010

- C Block elevator: June 4 – August 13, 2010

- The kitchen freight elevator: June 4 – August 13, 2010

- UCA elevator that travels from level 6 to 9: June 4 – August 13, 2010

- E Block elevator: August 13 – October 22, 2010

- D Block elevator: October 22 – December 31, 2010

- A Block elevator: January 3 – March 11, 2011
