The University of Lethbridge Mantas Lifeguard Club sent four members to the World Life Saving Championships, Rescue 2014, in Montpellier, France in September, producing a number of outstanding results.
Teran Hancock competed as part of the Canadian national team, while Merel Krosse, Dallas Walker and Keeley Watt were members of Team Alberta.
Hancock and Team Canada led the way, earning a silver medal in the Simulated Emergency Response Competition (SERC) whereby a rescue situation is created and athletes have two minutes to effectively rescue as many victims as they can.
For the Mantas, the world-class competition proved to be a learning experience as well. The event was divided into pool and surf competitions and while the Mantas had trained for and practiced the pool exercises, they were seeing the surf events for the first time.
Watt and Krosse were part of a four-member team that achieved a new Canadian record in the 4x50-metre obstacle relay with a final time of 2 minutes, 17.98 seconds.
They then established another Canadian record in the 4x50-metre medley relay, posting a 2:05.51 time.
Walker, meanwhile, achieved a pair of personal best times in each of the 50-metre manikin carry and the 100-metre manikin carry with fins.
