New English Course Offering, English 4400: Violent Voyages: Fiction and Travel before 1800

This seminar will examine the relationship between travel literature and the early novel in the global eighteenth century with particular attention to violence and encounter. Themes such as empire, indigeneity, race, gender, and the environment will be scruinized in primary texts by Defoe, Swift, and Cook, and secondary criticism by Pratt, Byrd, and Ghosh.
