December 2015 Kudos Report!

ART
- Annie Martin (Art) is participating in À la recherché (in search of practice-based research), a group exhibition curated by Barbara Balfour at the Open Studio Gallery in Toronto from Jan. 8 – Feb. 6, 2016. The working title of the show À la recherche (in search of practice-based research), suggests a call in honour of research, as something to be celebrated, and also alludes to the title of Marcel Proust’s novel À la recherche du temps perdu. Etymologically, there is a sense of “search” within “research,” which curator Barbara Balfour is keeping in mind in undertaking this curatorial project. Research has been at the heart of Balfour’s practice for many years, but she has also been thinking about it in a more concerted fashion lately, in terms of the notion of “practice-based research.”
- Izmer Ahmad (BA Art ’93), Robert Bechtel (BFA Art ’95), George Ho (BFA Art ’92) and Yoko Takashima (BFA Art ’93) have work in Bridge, an exhibition at The Gallery at Casa. These artists studied and exhibited together while attending the University of Lethbridge in the 1990s and since then have taken divergent paths and varied approaches to their practices. Izmer Ahmad (Malaysia/Dubai), an artist and educator teaching at the University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, is exhibiting works on paper; Robert Bechtel (Lethbridge), an artist and long-time volunteer within the Lethbridge arts community, displays a selection of his paintings; George Ho (Vancouver), a writer and artist with recent exhibitions in Hong Kong and Santa Monica, brings his sculpture to the exhibition; and Yoko Takashima (Victoria), a media artist and professor at the University of Victoria, presents a video work.
Bridge runs from Jan. 9 – Feb. 26, and admission is free.
