The Offices of the Vice President Research and Research and Innovation Services are asking the University of Lethbridge community for suggestions of nominees to put forward to the RSC Fellowship in fall 2017.  As part of the annual selection and nomination process, the VPR and Office of Research and Innovation Services are looking for input in the cases of institutional nominations.  Normally, the University can submit up to three nominations to the Fellowship of the RSC on an annual basis.    

Deadline for suggestions is May 10, 2017.

To provide a suggestion for a future RSC Fellowship nomination, please submit the following:

1. Nominee’s current CV in any format acceptable by the tri-council (NSERC, CIHR or SSHRC);

2. A 1,000-word narrative summary of the suggested nominee’s accomplishments outlining how the candidate’s record meets the statutory criteria of excellence and why the candidate is deserving of election;

3. A draft cover letter indicating the rationale for nomination; and

4. Names of three suggested referees.

The Royal Society of Canada –

The Royal Society of Canada (RSC): The Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada was established under an Act of Parliament in 1883 as Canada’s National Academy, the senior collegium of distinguished scholars, artists and scientists in the country. The primary objective of the Society is to promote learning and research in the arts, the humanities and the natural and social sciences.  The objects and purposes of the RSC are: to serve Canada and Canadians by recognizing Canada’s leading intellectuals, scholars, researchers and artists and, by mobilizing them in open discussion and debate, to advance knowledge, encourage integrated interdisciplinary understandings and address issues that are critical to Canada and Canadians.

It is normally the case that intellectual achievements will be evidenced by a body of publications or creative activities exhibiting original contributions. However, the criteria are also interpreted as speaking to “non-academic intellectual accomplishments” whether in business, civil society, or public service. The distinguishing characteristic of the intellectual and artistic accomplishments is their excellence, not the institutional setting within which they have been achieved.

Fellowship and College Member Selection process –

In the spring of each year, a call for suggestions for College and Fellowship nominations to the RSC will be launched.  Feedback on the packages submitted will be sought from those who currently sit in the RSC as Fellows or College members.  Feedback and nomination suggestions will be considered by the VPR and AVPR and then a final decision regarding nominations to be put forward in the coming year will rest with the President.  The Grants Facilitators within the Office of Research and Innovation Services will be responsible for working with the nominees in an iterative way to develop and submit the nomination on behalf of the University of Lethbridge.
