Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions (AIHS) Health Research New Investigator award

We are pleased to announce the launch of the AIHS Health Research New Investigator award,* developed in partnership with provincial universities. The award supports the recruitment of outstanding junior researchers to build translational capacity in areas of provincial need in health research and innovation.

The goal of the AIHS Health Research New Investigator award is to sustain the high calibre of research at our universities by attracting the best and brightest to their first academic appointment at an Alberta university.  The award is open to researchers currently working in Alberta as well as researchers outside the province. The award supports the province’s priorities of job creation and the health of families and communities, as the research generated through the award will address health and health care needs of Albertans.

Funding for this award will be transitioned from the already successful AIHS Translational Health Chairs program, created with $42 million committed by AIHS in 2013. That program currently supports several individuals and their networks with funding commitments of over $22 million. Funds remaining from the Translational Health Chairs program will be used for the AIHS Health Research New Investigator awards. Each award is up to five years with a possible two year extension, and is non-renewable.

*The process for recruiting AIHS Health Research New Investigators is coordinated by the Vice-President (Research) Office at one of Alberta's Comprehensive Academic and Research Institutions (CARIs): the University of Alberta, University of Calgary, University of Lethbridge and Athabasca University.
