First, what is an interlibrary loan (ILL) and why should you care? In a nutshell, no one library can hold all the information its patrons need, so libraries share resources amongst ourselves to provide to our respective patrons. This is a free service for faculty, staff, and students of the University of Lethbridge.
The University Library upgraded its ILL services over the summer and some of the service’s new features include:
- REQUEST CONFIRMATION. Patrons that successfully submit an interlibrary loan request will receive email confirmation that their submission was successful.
- REQUEST TRACKING. From submission to arrival, patrons will now be able to track the progress of their requests via their Library record.
- DOWNLOAD FROM ACCOUNT. Did you accidentally delete the email that provided your request’s download link? No more worries if you did. If you sign-in to your Library account, you will be able to download the requested article if you do so within two weeks of the article’s receipt and you are under the five downloads per request limit.
- REQUEST HISTORY. Have you asked yourself, “What was the name of the article that I requested back in…?” Along with request tracking, you will be able to view your request history. NOTE: You may see download links in your history; however, they may be expired if older than two weeks.
- THE ALBERTA LIBRARY (TAL) ONLINE CATALOGUE INTEGRATION. If you use the TAL Online (talonline.ca) catalogue and locate books at different libraries in Alberta, then you can request the item from TAL Online and U of L staff will borrow the resource from the library that has it available. Once it arrives here, we will notify you by email. BONUS: You do not have to fill out a big form to submit your request; the integration service does that for you.
Work on refining the service is ongoing, so we need to hear from you about how to be better. If you have comments, concerns, or questions, please email lib.illo@uleth.ca.
