Suzy Lake was born in Detroit and immigrated to Canada in 1968, following the 1967 Detroit riots, settling in Montreal. Influenced by social and political involvement concurrent with the early Conceptual period, she is known for her large-scale photography, dealing with the body as both subject and device. Lake was one of a pioneering group of artists in the early ‘70s who adopted performance, video and photography in order to explore the politics of gender, the body and identity. Early works form part of two touring exhibitions: WACK!  Art and Feminist Revolution  1965 – 1980, first shown at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art in 2007; and Identity Theft: Eleanor Antin, Lynn Hershman, Suzy Lake  1972 – 1978 at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in 2007. Lake is represented in The Feminist Avant-Garde of the 1970s, organized by Sammlung Verbund, touring Europe from 2013 – 16. Her work continues to use references to the aging body as a means to investigate notions of beauty in the context of youth and consumer culture. In 2014, a retrospective of her work, Introducing Suzy Lake, opened at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Lake has a long exhibition history in Canada. Her work has also been shown in Europe, the US, South America and Asia. She is represented by Georgia Scherman Projects in Toronto, Galerie Donald Browne in Montreal, and Michael Solway in Cincinnati.
