A legacy of coal mining: Challenges of integrating end-pit lakes into the landscape
Dr. Luek received his Ph.D. in 2011 from Laurentian University, Sudbury, ON. His research focuses on ecosystems under environmental stress. He has studied aquatic food–web responses to acidification, metal contamination, pharmaceuticals, the effects of coal mining and global warming.
At the University of Lethbridge, Dr. Luek studies selenium contaminated coalmining end-pit lakes in the Canadian Rockies. He uses an ecosystem manipulation approach to reduce Se contamination in end-pit lakes in-situ. Additionally, he is interested in the aquatic invertebrate community structure in end-pit lakes and their ability to support a productive fish community in the future.
