When Art and Architecture Were One: Ron Thom and the Allied Arts
From his west coast beginnings to his career peak in Toronto, architect Ron Thom (1923-86) helped define Canada’s 20th century architectural identity. But he was trained in Vancouver as an artist, not an architect; and this foundation distinguished his work from the stark International Style in vogue during his time. From the B.C. Electric Building to Trent University, his west-coast beginnings and artistic perspective helped him create some of the most dramatic and yet poetically intimate landmarks in Canadian architecture.
Adele Weder is a Vancouver-based writer and curator. A long-standing architectural writer for many Canadian and international periodicals, she is also the co-author of monographs of B.C. Binning, Selwyn Pullan and Dan Hanganu. Her curatorial work includes the west coast iteration of Beatriz Colomina’s Clip-Stamp-Fold exhibition, several installations at the Maison d’architecture in Montreal, and the nationally travelling exhibition “Ron Thom and the Allied Arts”, currently at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton and opening the Nickle Galleries in Calgary in June of this year.
