How to incorporate the gravitational force in a quantum description of the universe remains one of the big open problems in fundamental physics.
In this talk we will introduce and discuss some recent progress in the phenomenological interpretation of the universe as a granular (noncommutative) entity at the Planckian scale. We will also show how to make contact with recent astrophysical and cosmological data.
