Dr. Bryan Kolb was recently named Officer of the Order of Canada by Governor General David Johnston on December 30, on the eve of the Order’s 50th anniversary. Created in 1967, the Order of Canada is one of our country’s highest honours. The citation for Dr. Kolb’s appointment highlights his leadership and his outstanding contributions to our scientific understanding of brain function and development.

A renowned Canadian neuroscientist, Bryan Kolb has made groundbreaking contributions to his discipline. Dr. Kolb was the first to demonstrate how new brain cells grow to restore cerebral function both in development and adulthood and the first to show (with Dr. Terry Robinson) that psychoactive drugs produce permanent changes in neuronal structure in cerebral structures and that these changes influence later brain plasticity. Dr. Kolb, along with Dr. Ian Whishaw, co-wrote the textbook that defined the field of neuropsychology and is now in its 7th edition.

With a reputation for superior science, Dr. Kolb has mentored over 150 students and is a member of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research program in Child Brain Development.
