Patrick studies the evolutionary biology of ageing. Age-related declines in demographic performance seem inherently maladaptive, but most species are subject to such declines nonetheless. Why does nature not simply select against the alleles that cause ageing? And why do closely-related taxa sometimes exhibit vastly different rates of age-related decline? Patrick conducts laboratory experiments with duckweed (a tiny aquatic plant) and uses mathematical modelling to address fundamental questions pertaining to the evolutionary biology of ageing.
