Unpacking the International Volunteer Experience
Speaker:  Dr. Kaylan Schwarz (Faculty, School of Liberal Education)
Day/Date:  Thursday, October 20, 2022
Time:  4 p.m.
Location:  AH-116 (Anderson Hall)

My doctoral research examined the contemporary trend of short-term international volunteering among undergraduate students. In this presentation, I investigate the ways participants employed notions of "authenticity" within their personal travel narratives, differentiated themselves from "other" volunteers, and navigated difficult representational choices when communicating their international volunteer experiences to a public audience via social media. Overall, this study reveals an uncustomary portrait of international volunteers, those who are hyperconscious of the labels and connotations surrounding their project work and their identities as white westerners.

Dr. Schwarz joined the School of Liberal Education as an Assistant Professor in August 2021. She holds an Honours BA in Psychology from the University of Guelph, an MA in Curriculum Studies from the University of Toronto, an MPhil in Educational Research from the University of Cambridge, and a PhD in the Sociology of Education from the University of Cambridge. She was a SSHRC postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education at McGill University (2019-2021) and is the principal investigator on a SSHRC Insight Development Grant project entitled Constructing feminist identities through participatory visual methodologies (2020-2022).
