Afterimage by Robert Chafe, winner of the 2010 Governor General Award, appears at the University Theatre from February 10 through 14 at 8 pm.  Only the second production in the history of the play, this visual and emotional thriller touched the hearts of student actors and is sure to do the same for audiences.

Adapted for the stage by Newfoundland playwright Robert Chafe, the play is based on a short story by poet and novelist Michael Crummey, a fellow Newfoundlander. In a Newfoundland town, a woman develops the mysterious ability to see flashes of the future. The truth is hard to hide from other people, especially within her own family. When shocking secrets are revealed, danger looms not only on the horizon, but also in the home

“Audiences can expect a thrilling production with a captivating story and startling twists,” says director Nicholas Hanson. “The play combines tense situations, light-hearted moments and imaginative surprises.”

Hanson also explains that entire experience of the play has particularly moved the students. “Afterimage explores sibling rivalry, social exclusion, and the struggle to feel a genuine sense of belonging and, as such, has really resonated with our students,” he says.

To add to the experience, Afterimage also features a number of stunning technical effects, including fire, pyrotechnics and electricity designed by new design instructor, Lee Burckes, who joined the faculty in January.

“Creating the magical world of the play fostered meaningful learning opportunities for our students and we look forward to sharing our work with the community,” says Hanson.

Alongside Hanson and Burckes, the creative design team for Afterimage includes Professor Leslie Robison-Greene (costumes), staff member Aaron Collier (sound) and BFA Dramatic Arts major Jenna Schwartz (Assistant Director). The cast includes eight students, while the construction and execution of the show’s technical elements involved the enthusiastic participation of the entire staff and dozens of more students working behind the scenes.
