SAMWAK Talk - Equity in Occupational Health & Safety

Alberta’s trucking industry is heavily safety regulated yet comparatively unregulated from a labour and economics perspective. In my time in the industry as a driver and fleet safety manager, I saw many questionable labour practices and discordance between what I learned in my formal safety education and how I saw safety practised at trucking companies (carriers) — safety practices likely to produce inequitable results in a diverse workforce. As part of my Master of Arts program in the Department of Women and Gender Studies, I am conducting research aimed at understanding how safety managers at Alberta-based trucking companies perceive their role within the context of their carrier’s overarching organizational structure and to better understand the role of equity in the safety programs they oversee.
