When it feels like everything is Pending …

Careers, futures and even possible opportunities can be a source of disquiet for students. So many exciting things going on and so much of it is in flux. Sometimes, as a student, it feels like everything is unsettled.

Pending…: the Annual Student Art Exhibition presents work by emerging studio artists from the University of Lethbridge Art programs that explores themes of identities and transitions. The exhibition opens with a reception on Saturday, March 5 at 8 pm in the Dr. Foster James Penny Building.

"It's kind of nerve wracking,” says Art major Kelsey Tuck. “We get to practice skills we really need to have to make it as artists. We have to submit works and wait to see if we're accepted and, if we are, we have to trust the curators to make sure our work looks good where they hang it! It's been a great experience."

The exhibition also highlights the work of students in Art History & Museum Studies, who developed the theme, selected the artworks, and installed the exhibition.  “Most programs cannot provide this kind of opportunity to student curators and artists,” says Dr. Anne Dymond, who directs the project. “Our students are really able to put theory into practice.”

According to Courtney Green, a Museum Studies student, “It’s one thing to read theory about who to develop a theme and select some artworks and reject other, but it is much more complicated in practice. Especially when the work of friends is involved!”  She adds, "The Museum Studies courses where we get to really work as curators are amazing. Most art history programs do not have this kind of space and opportunities for students to take charge. I've really learned a lot of practical skills."

Pending…: Annual Student Art Exhibition runs until March 18 and is open to the public Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm.
