“The Book was Better…”: thinking about film adaptations with Honoré de Balzac.
Adaptations of novels have expanded far beyond film, from early radio and theatre adaptations to recent graphic novels and on-line fan fiction. But films still remain extremely popular with directors and audiences alike. Why are we drawn to these intermedial adventures when so often we find that we preferred the book, and how can we understand them better on their own terms?
