MOBILE: PAINTING AS A PRACTICE OF PEREGRINATION

By Anne-Laure Djaballah

Mobile (fr): originating from the Latin mobilis, it means susceptible of being moved or moving, refers to that which incites or creates an impulse, as well as to the body in motion. The word relates to mobility, mobilize, signifying deep changes, pertaining to motif/motivation, motor, and to that which explains and justifies a judgement or decision.

Mobile (n.m.): motif qui pousse quelqu’un à agir, qui determine certaines de ses conduites. Moteur, motivation, fondement.

Some understanding comes through doing. This knowledge belongs to the body in motion: walking, gathering, listening and watching. While walking, all this happens with barely a trace left behind, but with paint, movement is mapped out, recording this encounter of body and matter in space. The marks are bounded, enclosed, and encoded with meaning. On the surface, walking and painting seem to be of quite different natures, but can be experienced as being firmly entwined together. I have come to understand them together as my ‘mobile’

This installation translates materially my experience of walking and painting while in Lethbridge these last two years.
