Let’s Talk About Music Series presents “Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert”
Tuesday, April 14, 2015
7:00 – 9:00pm
Penner Classroom at CASA (230 8th Street South)
In the context of our Let's Talk About Music Series, Brian Black, Ph.D., discusses masterpieces of classical music.
The third of our talks in the series deals with two great masterpieces of chamber music: Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet, opus 18, no 6, and Franz Schubert’s Quintet in C major, D. 956. The Beethoven Quartet stands at the very beginning of his long and influential series of string quartets. It is a work of great power and imagination. The Schubert Quintet, on the other hand, comes from the last few months of his short life and is one of the most moving pieces of chamber music in the 19th century. We will look at both works in the context of their composer’s life and achievements. The third work on the program is a string quartet by Brian Black, written over the last three years and inspired by the Diary of Anne Frank. We will look briefly at the quartet, its main ideas, and what it tries to express.
