Let’s Talk About Music Series presents “Henry Purcell”
Tuesday, January 13, 2014
7:00 – 9:00pm
Penner Classroom at CASA (230 8th Street South)
In the context of our Let's Talk About Music Series, Brian Black, Ph.D., discusses masterpieces of classical music.
Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas is one of the great masterpieces of opera (and one of the few operas in English before the end of the 19th century), yet it comes down to us in an incomplete form and the only record of its performance during Purcell’s all-too-short life is at a girl’s school. This beautiful, yet mysterious work will be the subject of the second talk in the series. We will look at the work that inspired it, Vergil’s Aeneid, and how it was adapted to the operatic stage. We will also delve into the various influences and styles that Purcell brought together to successfully in his music within the context of his life and enduring achievements, and will hear and discuss important excerpts of the work.
If you are interested in attending this talk, please register by emailing music.conservatory@uleth.ca or by calling the Conservatory of Music at (403)329-2304.
Admission is by donation to our scholarship program, which supports children who study at the Conservatory of Music.
