Creative Appropriations: Identities, Communities, and Development in Cross-Cultural and Interdisciplinary Perspectives

The Creative Appropriations Interdisciplinary Research Development Fund research group consisted of five scholars from varied disciplines—Carol Williams, Patrick Wilson, Bonnie Lee, Glenda Bonifacio, and Linda Many Guns—who engaged the complex subject of indigenous and racialized women’s creative appropriations. Over the course of the research timeline, we undertook both collective and individual activities around the intersectionality of multiculturalism, identity and citizenship. Over two years, intensive “works-in-progress” workshops were organized with four scholars invited to join us at the University Lethbridge: Dr. Vijay Agnew (York) in March 2013; Dr. Sneja Gunew (UBC) in April 2013; Dr. Marieme Lo (Toronto) in March 2014; and Dr. Tania Li (Toronto) in September 2014. This incubator mode of knowledge production, dependent on intense intellectual exchanges with external scholars, allowed us to consider whether or how our interdisciplinary research interests and methods might effectively converge. Fortunately, the visiting scholars also generously gave public presentations on their current research and met with graduate students to discuss research methods. Networking across the various communities who fuel the intellectual vibrancy of the university therefore served as common ground for our project: the scholars directly involved on the grant; invited scholars; graduate students from all faculties; faculty outside of the team; and those attending the public talks. Ultimately, individual more than any collective outcomes resulted from our project and this talk will contemplate both our original intentions and the individual scholarly results.

Please join us on Wednesday April 8, 2015, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in PE261 for the group's final public presentation! All are welcome - snacks and a host bar will be available.
