The Office of the Vice-President Research invites you to join one of the Interdisciplinary Research Development Fund (IRDF) supported groups as they present their work at a free public lecture and reception.
Over the past two years, Drs. Nicole Rosen, Claudia Gonzalez, Inge Genee, Robbin Gibb, Fangfang Li and Noella Piquette have investigated Language, its Development, its Assessment, and its connection with Identity from several disciplinary angles: linguistics, neuroscience, psychology, and education. Their overarching question is: What does it take to become a sophisticated language user? What we mean by a sophisticated language user is someone who is able to use appropriate language in all situations in which life puts them. The group has worked on questions relating to the relationship between motor development and language development, early literacy and executive function, early language and literacy, local LDS and FNMI varieties of English, and bilingual language acquisition. Their work is both fundamental and applied: they aim at proper understanding of the phenomena they study, but also at translating what they learn into practical strategies for parents, educators, speech-language pathologists, students, and policy makers.
Presentation Date: January 15, 2015
