What might the future of education look like? An optimistic answer to the question might be: more open. As costs of education continue to rise to unsustainable levels (there is $1.7 trillion in student debt in the U.S. alone), the need for rethinking how education and educational content is accessed becomes ever more pressing. Open Educational Resources (OER) refer to teaching and learning content that are freely accessible for anyone to re-use and re-purpose. The concept of OER is transformative, but why isn’t it more commonplace and why haven’t more students and educators even heard of it? In this talk, we will discuss the challenges and areas of opportunities for what a more open educational future might look like.

Tyler Shores' research focuses on digital habits, social media, and how digital environments shape how we work, think, and learn. Prior to Cambridge, Tyler worked in online education at Stanford, served as a director of digital textbooks at an international education nonprofit organization, and worked at the Google world headquarters in Mountain View, California while running the Authors@Google program. His various work has been featured in The New York Times, BBC, WIRED, and many others. And he was once on an episode of The Simpsons.
