Little Fairy on the Prairie - Cultivating Queer Community Through the Arts
Jay Whitehead discusses the founding of his company Theatre Outré and the impact it has had on the queer community in Lethbridge.
Jay Whitehead is the founder and Artistic Director of Theatre Outré and currently the Chair of the Drama Department at the University of Lethbridge. Whitehead is the creator or co-creator of shows including UNSEX’d, Tab & Landon, CRABS and Castrati - An Electro Drag Opera. For Theatre Outré, Jay has appeared in and/or directed productions of Vigil, The Confession of Jeffrey Dahmer, Montparnasse, A Thought in Three Parts, How to Leave, The Birth of Casper G. Schmidt, Late Company and My Funny Valentine. He has had articles published in journals including Canadian Theatre Review and alt.theatre and most recently co-authored a chapter for the book Q2Q: Queer Canadian Theatre and Performance published by Playwrights Canada Press. He works as an actor, director, choreographer and teacher across Canada and abroad having presented his creative work in cities including Calgary, Toronto, Halifax, Saint John, Vancouver and Dublin.
