The Department of History Colloquium Series presents The Inaugural Driedger Lecture sponsored by the Driedger Fund entitled "Charting from the Water: The Making of the Selden Map" on Monday, January 25, 2016 at 7:00 p.m.

Abstract: In 2008 an old Chinese paper map was unearthed in the Bodleian Library at Oxford. The map, which can roughly be dated to 1608, depicts East Asia as no other Chinese map has ever done, with startling accuracy and detailed data about shipping lanes. This lecture will explore map-making in this period to ask how this map cam into being, and what it reveals about China's involvement in global trade in the 17th century.

Reception to follow. Everyone is welcome.

Note: L-1060 is located in the hallway leading into the entrance of the library.

The Driedger Fund supports the study of history through scholarships and special events, and is made possible by Dr. Gerhard Driedger's children to honour their father's lifelong love of history.
