Professor Paul Shore will examine four key Christian missionary encounters with Islam: the semi-legendary expedition of St. Francis of Assisi to the Sultan of Babylon, Jesuit Michel Nau's travels through the Ottoman Empire, learning Arabic and attempting conversions, the Victorian medical missionaries of Great Britain, and the contemporary Pentecostal proselytizing along the "frontier of faith" in Cameroon.
